Alfalfa

Location: across the U.S.
Setting: wild and under cultivation, prefers sunny locations, ditches, fields

DESCRIPTION
Type: Perennial
Height: Up to 3ft
Stem: branching, multiple
Leaves: 3 oblanceolate leaflets
Flowers: Pea-type, usually purple, clustered at ends of branches
Fruit: tiny brown seeds in small, tight spiral pods

Look-alikes: Sweet clover (flowers white or yellow, not toxic)

EDIBLE PARTS
Leaves (spring-fall): raw or cooked. 
Flowers (summer): raw or cooked
Sprouts (cultivated): raw or cooked   

As medicinal herb:
Leaves: improve digestion, blood cleanser, used for arthritis, kidney ailments, water retention.
Seeds: Cooling poultice for boils
